A blue sky fades to white
before it reaches the scribbled lines
of the umber hill that stretches
below it. Reclining in front
of that is a hill colored patchwork
with greens and browns and more.
Another hill colored the same crosses
to the right in front while leaving the left.
Dark grey patches and gashes run
swiftly and playfully across as they
play a game only they know.

Jacob's Ladder
A brown, dead ladder to the sky.
Nothing like the one Jacob saw
with its gold coloring and
heavenly travelers
that journeyed from God to earth
and back to Him again.
The only one who travels the broken
tree branches is a sapling
interwoven with its spokes.
A tree, old and dead looking
with only broken branches
as steps climbing to no one.
Nothing like the one Jacob saw

heavenly travelers

Daffodil in bloom
A rough, green stem in a cacophony
of light and dark tans and browns,
reaches longingly up to the sky
joined by long, thin leaves that
reach nothing. But a sun-yellow head
deigns to bow down to touch it
with its mane of six petals that reach out
as if to welcome the spring that is coming.

Rock
The beater of Goliath and
the braker of ankles.
An object that can fly through the air
with the greatest of ease
or roll with the river.
Both the builder
and destroyer of fortresses.
The enemies of farmers.
The friends of some masons.
A firm foundation that lasts through the ages.
A vicious creature that cuts and trips
A kind creature that supports and holds.
Both useful and bothersome, pretty and ugly,
Rocks can be found everywhere.

Blanket
Endless, endless, the possibilities are endless.
An item of comfort to be held
in times of distress.
A being of warmth that holds
you close when cold.
A cape to be worn to save the world
or a shelter from the world when
it is the one
that is cruel.
Material for a fort to hide
and play in.
Protection from the ground to lay
and tan on.
A toga to play act with.
A curtain to fall on your play.
Memories of times
and peoples
long past.
A symbol of what now is.
A blanket could be one or all
or none of these.
It is what is needed most
by the one who owns it.

in times of distress.

Cliches
Sometimes, as you are digging yourself
a hole, you may also open mouth,
insert foot and you must play your trump card
to get out. Especially when you
see the blind leading the blind and say,
"Love is blind and thus they must be head
over heals in love with each other."
Absence makes the heart grow fonder so
they prefer you to stay in the ballpark
as they leave it. It is part of God's plan
for them to kill two birds with one stone
by leaving you. It's all up in the air
so we must hit the ground running.
You look waterlogged. Sit down right here.
This chair has your name on it, honest.

Daylight Savings
When it comes to us in the fall,
"Extra sleep! Hurrah!" We all call,
And slip into our nice, warm beds,
With wondrous dreams inside our heads.
But then it comes again in spring
And no extra sleep does it bring.
It makes our lies seem most dour,
As it steels that single sad hour.

And slip into our nice, warm beds,
With wondrous dreams inside our heads.
But then it comes again in spring
And no extra sleep does it bring.
It makes our lies seem most dour,

Epigrams
Life is all sunshine and roses but the sun still burns and the roses have thorns.
You're not all that and a bag of chips, you're not even half a chip.
Some people need glasses on their heart to see more clearly when they think they're in love.
The problem is not that people dream too big, it's just that they never get past the dreaming part.
Failure is not falling down, it's not getting back up. (I'm not sure if this is mine or not, I may have heard it and just not remembered hearing it)
No, he is not the boy I once knew. He grew up. Now he's the man I'm enjoying to get to know better.
